Whole Genome Sequencing for Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis (SAS)
in the Bouviers des Flandres.

Dr. Joshua Stern, of the Cardiac Genetics Laboratory at the University of California, Davis, is the principle investigator conducting studies focusing on the identification of mutation sequencing associated with Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis (SAS). Dr. Stern’s group is interested in including the Bouviers des Flandres in this important research, which has already found success in the Newfoundland and several other breeds. Currently, the Bouvier component of the study is in the “sample collection” phase. The lab must first collect blood samples from 24 SAS-affected Bouviers and then an additional 48 Bouvier samples to act as a “control” group before the study can effectively begin.

DNA will be extracted from whole blood and stored in Dr. Stern’s Cardiac Genetics Laboratory. If you have any questions regarding the submission of a blood sample, please contact . For those who wish to travel to the UCD campus, Dr. Stern is providing echocardiograms at no cost, conducted by his laboratory staff. To make an appointment for this free service, you may directly contact Dr. Stern’s assistant, Eric Ontiveros, at
