NIBdFC held their Regional Specialty June 7, 2013. Here are the RESULTS [pdf].
Our club regional show was again a success. Wonderful exhibitors, a very nice raffle table, and our first CERF clinic drew 35 participants.
NIBdFC held a carting event June 15-16, 2013. Here are the RESULTS [pdf].
Thanks again Julie & Bob for being great hosts and Kim for Chairing, and everybody for all the work and doing a great job. It was so good to see everyone again. Thanks for making the Carting Weekend a success. Here are the results I have and some comments. (I only did the alphabet soup for each dog once.....what great dogs we have!!!)
It was great to see old friends and meet new ones. It was a privilege to see Blanton's Isidor earn his Carting Championship and see Adara's Jubelen Jedi earn his Master Draft Dog title. It was also fun to see the novice dogs and handlers, new to carting, get excited and enjoy this event with their dogs.
A few additional notes added by Nancy Eilks – That little Border terrier was a real trooper. At 17 lbs, she had to haul the minimum 20 lbs on the mile-long freight haul – and, being a terrier, there was not an ounce of quit in her.
Delicious lunches were provided each day by and for the benefit of the Great Lakes Search and Rescue team, of which Julie and Bob Cramer are members. Over $100 was earned for their cause. Congratulations all around.

WORKSHOP - AN INTRODUCTION TO CARTING
The Rocky Mountain Bouvier des Flandres Club held an Introduction to Carting Workshop on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Patti Davieau’s home and carting course in Black Forest, CO. The workshop was open to all breeds with Bouviers getting priority to register. We had a great turnout that included 6 Bouviers, 2 Rottweilers, a Berner, a Malinois, 2 Black Russian Terriers and a spaniel.
Patti Davieau was our instructor. She has been involved with Bernese Mountain Dogs since 1982 and has been training dogs for conformation shows, obedience, agility & drafting for 30 years. Patti’s training is based on positive reinforcement. She is also a draft test judge and in May judged drafting at the BMDCA National Specialty in Colorado.
She stressed the need to not skip steps or hurry on from one to another before the DOG is READY. Too often the handler wants to get to the goal without doing the work needed to get there successfully.
We started with putting the harness on, which was later tested by harnessing your dog blindfolded.
Each step from dragging the traces (the straps that hitch to the cart), dragging PVC pipes hooked to the traces, leading the dog while a helper drags a cart behind, standing the dog between the shafts of the cart, hitching to the cart and eventually pulling the cart was explained and practiced. No one moved to the next step until their dog was relaxed and accepting the step they were on. If the dog offered too much resistance it was back to the previous step. Slow and easy pays off. Some of our Bouviers took to it like they had done it their whole life, especially Blue owned by Coral and Jim Samuels. By the end of the day most of the dogs were pulling carts quite easily.
We recommend that you give carting a try. You may have a future carting star lying on your couch right now. The BMDCA Draft Test is very similar to the ABdFC test so if you can’t find a workshop or introduction course offered by a Bouvier club look for a local Berner club that might be offering one. An ABdFC Carting Test is offered at the ABdFC National Specialty every year.
